Previous Game(s): N/A

World Description: N/A

History: here

Personality:

He survived.

He survived because 47 others died, some of them by his hand, when he was just a teenager. And it's eating him up inside.

He hates everyone. He hates them because they're part of the system that sends children off to slaughter each other for entertainment. He hates them because they sit idly by and allow it to happen. He hates them because it's easier than coming to like someone and then watching them die, either because another teenager slaughtered them for entertainment or because their family couldn't afford food or medicine.

He hates them because none of them understand what it's like to know that you're only alive because 47 other children died. Or what it's like to watch for 23 years as children you're supposed to be helping stay alive don't have the resources or the skills to defeat those who are bigger and stronger, and one by one they die. Forty-six of them.

No one can understand that, and he hates them all for it.

Even when he finally ends up with a tribute who has a chance at winning, it's still easier to keep hating. After twenty-three years it's a hard habit to break, and Katniss Everdeen is a hard person to like most of the time. She doesn't let people get close either. He actually puts some effort into his role of mentor, because he sees in her the kind of fighting spirit that might actually get her through this alive, but he's still surly, sarcastic, arrogant, and even (outwardly, at least) indifferent.

He wasn't always incapable of caring about someone. He had a family once, and a girlfriend, until the Capitol killed them as retribution. After that, his only friend is alcohol, which helps him get through having to mentor all of the tributes he knows will never make it home again. During the Games, he formed an alliance with one of his fellow tributes from District 12, a tribute who as it turns out had been a friend of Katniss' mother. He is upset by her death, even though it happened after she had ended their alliance. Whoever he is now is who the Capitol made him, by forcing him to kill and then taking away everyone he cared about.

He's canny and calculating. He won his Games by outsmarting his opponents. He discovered the force field around the arena, which he was later able to use to his advantage (although that was what caused President Snow to kill his family). Once he realizes he's got tributes who might actually stand a chance, he starts building a strategy to get Katniss out alive (though he doesn't bother sharing this fact with Katniss). It wouldn't have taken much to convince him to join the rebellion against the Capitol; he hates them and their Games. A strategic mind like his would have been sought after by the rebels (even if it comes in a difficult-to-get-along-with package).

He was able to obtain some necessary items for Katniss in the arena, so he is capable of being polite and negotiating with others when necessary. He just doesn't often find it necessary. He can also cut down on his alcohol consumption, when he has a reason. Again, he doesn't often have a reason.

He has terrible nightmares after his time in the arena, and doesn't sleep when it's dark. When he does sleep, it's with a knife clutched in his hand. It's best not to be within arm's reach when waking him up.

Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters? N/A

Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

He originally came to town to help with the efforts to reverse Peeta's highjacking, and now has decided to stay in town rather than return to a place that hasn't felt like home in a very long time. Besides, even with the progress that Peeta has made, he still has more progress to make, and he wants to be there for that. He's had good conversations with a few people in town already, and while he isn't going to go around telling everyone his history, he is capable of carrying on a normal conversation. As for expanding CR, his job at the stables would bring him in contact with others who like animals, and in canon he used to visit the black market and so would visit the market place here. He also would visit the various establishments that sell alcohol, and even try and make contact with those who make their own moonshine.

What will your character do for work? At the stables, feeding the animals, etc.

Inventory: Clothes and the knife he always keeps with him when he's sleeping.

Third-Person Sample:

The nightmares had finally faded late last night -- or early this morning, depending on who you ask -- enough to let him drop into a sleep aided by an alcohol-induced stupor and a faint lightening of the horizon indicating a retreat of the darkness. Katniss and the other inhabitants of the house had long since learned to let him sleep it off; there's a reason he arranged for the shift that he did.

It's pushing noon when he finally blinks awake, with a fuzzy mouth and a pounding headache. He reaches for the flask stashed under his pillow next to the knife. He takes a couple of swigs -- to take the edge off the headache -- and checks over his clothes. They're rumpled from having been worn yesterday and then slept in, but that can be easily fixed. He straightens them before heading for the door (wearing the same clothes two days in a row -- what would Effie say!).

He heads for the marketplace first, for lunch. There's a wonderful array of food vendors there, many of them alien, offering dishes that eclipse even those available in the Capitol. Some of the vendors, too, remind him of Greasy Sae and her fellow vendors at the Hob back in District 12. Panem hadn't done much to inspire his loyalty, but it is still the only home he's known, until now.

He has about an hour to fill before he has to be at work, so after he finishes lunch he wanders through the stalls, making purchases here and there, filling his pockets with trinkets. He never saw the need for anything like this before, but somehow living with others has given him more of a need for these sorts of things.

At the stables he does the rounds, making sure all the tenants have food and water, lingering by the horses. He likes them best. They're very majestic, and not for the first time he finds himself imagining how much easier it would have been for all those refugees to District 13 if they could have ridden a horse across the country instead of having to go on foot.

It's easy work, and that suits him fine. Once he's done with it for the day, he gathers up his coat and the rest of his items. Before he goes home and distributes the trinkets to their new owners (Katniss, Peeta, even Effie) he'll stop by the saloon for a late dinner. Wonderful place, this saloon. He wishes they had those back home.

As he heads in the direction of the saloon, he wonders when he started thinking of District 12 as home.

First-Person Sample:

You want to know what they did to me? It's simple, really. I was a boy, with a family and a future (not much of a future, but a future), and a girl. I probably would have married that girl (and if we get married young in the districts, it's because we tend to die young). Then my name came out of the vat and I wasn't just a boy anymore. I was a tribute, a sacrifice for some supposed mistake made by ancestors I'd never met. I was paraded, put on display, given odds, bet on. I was entertainment in their blood-soaked Games. I still see the images and hear the sounds every night before sleeping: the axe flying towards my head, the sizzle behind me, the axe coming back in the other direction. The thud as it hits its target, the cannon firing. Then the rest of the images start, of the other tributes, some my allies, then long-forgotten memories of my mother, my brother, my girl, all killed within two weeks of my victory to make an example of me.

You want to know what they did to me? They pulled my name out of a vat.
